Pieve a Socana
Pieve a Socana
The archaeological area of Pieve a Socana presents the remains of an important Etruscan sanctuary, active between the 5th and 2nd centuries BC. The sacred place was located at a fundamental crossroads between the valley floor road, which led from Arezzo northwards, and the transversal road that connected the Casentino with Valdarno and Valtiberina. The Etruscan sanctuary of Socana was investigated in the late 1960s by the Soprintendenza alle Antichità d’Etruria. The excavations showed that the present-day parish church had been built on the remains of an Etruscan temple. Of the ancient sanctuary, the structures outside the temple are still visible, among which the imposing altar, placed on a quadrangular terrace, is striking. Made of sandstone blocks tightly joined and bound with dovetailed lead staples, it is characterised by its complex shaped profile.
